Wouldn’t it be great if everyone did exactly what you told them to do? If your car were mis-firing, and you went to the mechanic and told them that you wanted new spark plugs, you wouldn’t want them checking the compression. “Just put in new spark plugs like I asked, darn it!”

When you call to order a pizza, the operator doesn’t tell you that you could get a 2-topping pizza for their $5.99 special instead of the $18.50 pizza you just ordered. When you say you want a Supreme, you mean it!

Of course… Maybe customers don’t actually know what they want and are open to suggestions…

If you want a good haircut, what do you do? You go to a good barber and let them do their job. You tell them what you’re envisioning, but you let them take care of the details because they’re the expert.

If your car is making a grinding sound, you go to a good mechanic and let them do their job. Sure, you may specify you don’t want the car to make grinding noises, but if you’re smart, and the mechanic is good, you won’t have to tell them how to do their job, you just let them take care of things.

We all love a skilled craftsman we can trust to do a good job, so we should all strive to be that guy that our customers count on. Next time YOU’RE the expert and your customer (or boss?) asks for something, but you think you can do a better job, speak up! Go the extra mile, because then you’ll be the guy people go to when they’re looking for a good mechanic (or whatever).
